Custom Mirror Cutting

Sizes, Thicknesses & Edge Finishes

Custom mirror cutting means your mirror is cut from sheet stock to your exact dimensions, then edged and, where needed, safety-backed. Most wall and vanity mirrors are 1/4in (6mm) glass; 3/16in (5mm) suits smaller or inset panels. Edges are seamed, flat polished or beveled. We cut, edge and bevel in-house in Hyannis, so size and finish are ours to control.

Mirror Glass Specifications

Thickness

1/4in (6mm) standard for wall, vanity and gym mirrors; 3/16in (5mm) for smaller panels, cabinet door inserts and inset panels under roughly 24in x 36in

Glass type

Standard silvered float; low-iron / ultra-clear; bronze, grey or antique tinted; safety-backed (vinyl-film / CAT II)

Maximum span

Practical single-panel limits are set by stock sheet size and handling, not strength. Beyond roughly 40 sq ft, or any panel over about 72in in either direction, we recommend safety backing plus J-channel or a bottom shoe rather than clips alone. Very large walls are done as multiple butted panels.

Edge profile

Seamed (sanded, safe to handle, hidden by frame or J-channel); flat polished (bright, exposed edge); beveled at 1/2in or 1in; pencil polish on request

Hardware finish

Clips and J-channel in polished chrome, brushed nickel, matte black, oil-rubbed bronze and satin brass. Near the water, 316 stainless or a powder-coated aluminum J-channel holds up far better than plated steel

Backing / coating

Silver coating with two-coat protective paint backing standard; optional vinyl safety backing; moisture-resistant backing recommended for bathrooms and unheated seasonal properties

Mounting methods

Z-clips or rosette clips; aluminum J-channel top and bottom; mirror mastic adhesive over a sound substrate; French cleat for framed mirrors and heavy panels

Cutouts & shapes

Rectangles, radius corners, arches, circles and ovals; outlet, sconce and TV cutouts cut before edging, not after

Tolerance

Cut to your finished opening less a fitting allowance, typically 1/8in per side on a tiled or trimmed opening.

Which custom mirror size and thickness should you order?

For a standard bath or hallway mirror, order 1/4in standard silvered float with a flat polished or 1in beveled edge and mount it on clips that covers most jobs. Move to low-iron if the mirror is for makeup, a salon chair or a large feature wall where the green cast in a standard mirror would be obvious. Specify safety backing whenever the mirror is large, mounted over a stair, in a gym, or anywhere a fall would put glass into a walking path. Choose a framed install if the wall is plaster, bowed or out of plumb; frameless clips and J-channel assume a reasonably flat substrate, and any wall wave shows up in the reflection.
