FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Things You Need to Know about Fireplace Screen Design and Installation

What kind of glass is used for custom fireplace screens and doors?
  • Fireplace applications require specialized glass that can handle extreme temperatures. We use ceramic glass (like PyroCeram or Robax) for wood stoves and enclosed fireplace doors because it can withstand continuous temperatures over 1,200°F without shattering. For freestanding decorative screens placed a safe distance from open flames, heavy tempered glass may be used.
  • Yes. Over time, original fireplace door glass can become etched, clouded, or cracked. You don’t need to purchase a whole new metal fireplace assembly—we can cut a replacement piece of high-temperature ceramic glass to your exact dimensions and install it directly into your existing metal frame.
  • Tempered glass is heat-resistant up to roughly 400°F–500°F and is primarily used for the outer decorative screens or masonry fireplace doors that must remain open while the fire is burning. Ceramic glass is not actually glass but a transparent ceramic material that withstands extreme thermal shocks up to 1,200°F+; it is mandatory for doors that stay closed while a roaring fire is active.
  • Never clean fireplace glass while it is hot. Once it completely cools down, use a specialized ceramic glass cleaner or a damp cloth dipped in clean wood ash (a classic, scratch-free trick that breaks down carbon buildup). Avoid harsh abrasive pads or chemical window sprays like Windex, which can damage the specialized surface coatings.
