Custom glass shelves are cut, edged and tempered to your dimensions, then hung on brackets, concealed rods or standoffs. Thickness follows span: 1/4in (6mm) for short cabinet shelves, 3/8in (10mm) for most open shelving, 1/2in (12mm) for long or deep shelves and anything carrying real weight. We cut and edge in-house in Hyannis, so sizes are not limited to stock.

Start with the span and the depth, then pick the thickness off the table — most open custom glass shelves land on 3/8in, and 1/2in is the right answer any time the shelf is over about 30in long, deeper than 12in, or floating on concealed rods.
Choose the support next: brackets if the load is real or the wall is uneven, concealed rods if the look matters more than the capacity and you have solid blocking to anchor into, standoffs or cable for display work. Everything drilled, notched, or hung in a shower must be tempered, and every hole has to be designed before the glass goes through the oven there is no drilling a tempered shelf afterward.
In older Cape Cod houses, check what is actually behind the drywall before you commit to floating shelves; plaster over lath and stud bays that do not land where you want them are the usual reason a floating shelf becomes a bracketed one.
